Abalone Poaching Activities Melkbosstrand
The illegal poaching of Abalone in the Melkbosstrand area stays a concern, it is the highest criminal activity in our area.
Over the last week the Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) consisting of volunteers working with various Law Enforcement Agencies held various preventative and reactive operations. With preventative operations, the aim is to keep the poachers out of the water and thereby prevent the decimation of our natural resources and the marine ecology. Preventative is implemented by standing guard by the known drop-off points. However, as Melkbos has many entry points and green belts around the town, the poachers do slip past us at times and then the reactive operations are activated. Reactive operations entail confiscating Abalone, arresting the perpetrators and waiting for them to come out of the water and thereby we hope to discourage them from poaching in our area.
From 6 January to 13 January APU with the support from partnerships, SAPS Melkbosstrand, Law Enforcement Marine Unit, SAPS K9, SAPS Borderline and DEFF held various successful operations.
This resulted in preventing divers from poaching and
2 x Arrests
2 x Vehicles Impounded
8 x Crayfish confiscated
3 x Alikreukel confiscated
1337 x Abalone confiscated
Approximate Street value confiscated = R670 000.00
Volunteer Man Hours spend = Priceless
