On Friday Evening 5 January 2019, Melkbosstrand NHW Anti-Poaching Unit and Law Enforcement Marine Unit held a preventative operation.  APU Members were deployed from early evening at known poaching locations to deter poachers from entering the water.

Most members stood down after several hours following a quiet night, however shortly thereafter known poaching vehicles entered the area.  Our Law Enforcement Marine Member with the assistance of SAPS Melkbosstrand patrolled the seaside areas and noticed a suspicious vehicle.  After monitoring and searching the area movement was picked up.  A poacher left the spoils for the evening behind and fled to 16th Avenue.

One bag of abalone was retrieved containing 259 shucked abalone with an estimated street value of R129 500.00

Although no arrests were made, our efforts and those of our volunteers together with Melkbossstrand SAPS and Law Enforcement Marine Unit held a successful operation.

A total of 34 Man Hours were spent on this successful operation over a period of 8 hours in the field
