Its Monday 4 February 2019 late morning, communication comes through that members of the public and Avenue Response found 2 bags of Abalone abandoned on the shoreline.  APU members assist in retrieving the poachers loot just before they return to collect their spoils from the previous evening.  It’s handed over to the authorities with a count of 99 pieces.

There has been an unprecedented number of poachers and poaching activity in our town over the last couple of weeks.  APU volunteers battle to keep up with the hours spend on APU and making their daytime living but non the less we are planning a Proactive Operation which kicks off Monday 4 February early evening.  On this operation APU Melkbos joins forces with Law Enforcement Marine Unit, SAPS Border Line for this operation with SAPS Melkbosstrand and Avenue Response security ready to assist.

Unfortunately the divers managed to avoid us by seconds and get to the water, the pressure is on and the following action/successes for the evening transpire.

  • 4 Vehicles stopped, searched and profiled
  • 10 Carriers profiled and escorted out of Melkbos
  • 9 Poachers stopped and profiled no abalone found in the vehicle

The next morning APU members did a followup search of the area as no abalone were found with the divers.  Success their well-hidden 4 bags of loot is discovered and handed over to the authorities again!

R216 500.00 that is the approximate street value of the 433 abalone confiscated, combined with the pressure put on by APU volunteers and partners, hampering the illegal pillaging of our marine resources and hindering these criminal syndicates of dominating our beaches and safety.
